It may be with interleague games, it may be with eliminating or mandating the DH across the league, and it may be with significant rules changes that *forces* faster play. I do because it means instant gratification vs long term stability. You also have to understand that the expansion teams while not getting as much of the TV money as the other teams, have been able to circumvent the cap in ways that the established teams can't. The Saints have to get rid of dead weight and that means that they're going to have to eat some salaries. Jimmy Johnson did that last year but he also was able to convince some veterans to show up and play for less than what they would have gotten from other teams (He also had a very good draft). If the Saints are unwilling to eat those salaries then they won't get any better. If they were in the same position as the expansion teams, they could eat those salaries with no worries but they aren't. They're going to have to cull some lower priced veterans from the free agent pool and while price doesn't mean talent, it'll mean that they will be unable to compete for some of the better talent. They're not operating on the same playing field as the expansion teams and to expect them to be able to turn it around like they did would be unrealistic. They don't have the extra draft choices or the cap exclusions so they're going to have to operate like the Dolphins. Miami will take the next step next year but they won't be where they want to be until 1998. The Saints stagnated for several years (8-8, 7-9 and 7-9) before they finally succumbed. Miami was the same way (9-7, 10-6 and 9-7) before last year's 8-8. Had they not changed over, they might well have gone 6-10/7-9 under Shula and in need of an even more desperate move. I would equate both Miami and New Orleans to the Cowboys of the late '80s: 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 Dallas 12- 4 9- 7 10- 6 7- 9 7- 8 3-13 1-15 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 NO 11- 5 12- 4 8- 8 7- 9 7- 9 3-13 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 Miami 11- 5 9- 7 10- 6 9- 7 8- 8 I'd say that Miami was probably a year behind New Orleans in terms of total systems failure and if something hadn't been done, 1997 would be a year that is as bad as anything that NO or Dallas experienced (Of course, you could eliminate 1987 because Dallas won a couple of strike games that padded their final totals). In a weak division, the Saints can do a turn around but don't forget, the other weaklinks are sporting new coaches and they're going to be making changes as well. (St. Louis' coach is REALLY going to be under the gun because ownership thinks that they should be able to win NOW. I think that they made the same mistake that Arizona made when they got rid of Bugel just as the team was turning the corner). The Saints need to resist pressure from the fans and the expansion teams and do it right. RF> Ahhh, but what if you didn't? What if you were uncertain of RF> their future as I am the Saints' future? I wasn't uncertain because I KNEW who the coach was and what he was capable of doing. I supported the team when they were going down because I knew that better days were coming (I knew that Landry HAD to go and that someone would eventually get him to "retire"). When Jones bought the Cowboys, I felt that better days were coming and when it was rumored that he was going to hire Johnson, I KNEW that they were. I've supported the Cowboys, Lakers, Braves and A's through their toughest times because I knew that they'd turn it around. --- TrekEd 1.00 * Origin: Jerry Jones is the Anti-Christ (1:170/1701) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 114 SPORTS Ref: E1P00002 Date: 01/19/97 From: ED GRINNELL Time: 01:49pm \/To: ALAN HESS (Read 0 times) Subj: interleague play The 49ers traded Alan Hess to the Jets for saying: AH> season interconference play for many years. Do you feel the Super Bowl AH> would be more interesting if there was no interconference play during AH> the season, ensuring an air of mystery for the title game? Not at all. Since they started playing interconference games, the Super Bowl combatants have played 9 times during the regular season and the team that won in the Super Bowl went 5-4 during the regular season. If you divide the last 26 Super Bowls down the middle (Super Bowls since IC play), you'll see that in the first 13 years, the teams met 3 times and the average margin of victory in the Super Bowl was 13.0 while the average margin of victory when they didn't play was 10.6. In the last 13 years, the average margin of victory when they played (6 times) was 22.5 and when they didn't, it was 23.0. In those 6 years that they played, the AFC went 157-155-0 during the regular season and when they didn't, they went 171-194-1. In the last 13 years, the AFC has won the series 4 times, the NFC has won it 5 times and they've tied 4 times and yet, the NFC has won 12 of 13. The AFC won the season series this year, do you think Las Vegas put any weight into that when they put out the odds for this game? --- TrekEd 1.00 * Origin: Jerry Jones is the Anti-Christ (1:170/1701) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 114 SPORTS Ref: E1P00003 Date: 01/19/97 From: ED GRINNELL Time: 02:00pm \/To: ROB FERRARA (Read 0 times) Subj: Bowls After being aced by Monica Seles, Rob Ferrara said: RF> So what? Meanwhile, a TRUE national championship gets thrown out the window because the BEST teams are left out of the mix. Basketball expanded its field because of the fact that some teams were getting hurt by conference tournaments. You could eliminate conference championship games like they have in the SEC, WAC and Big 12 but at the same time, you'd also eliminate more out-of-conference games as conferences would replace them so that a regular season champion would be crowned by winning as many in-conference games as possible (But you then run the risk of what the Big 10 has with its schedule). The plan that I proposed would give you the best field and is MUCH fairer. --- TrekEd 1.00 * Origin: is the best freshman I've ever seen - Vitale (1:170/1701) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 114 SPORTS Ref: E1P00004 Date: 01/18/97 From: DANIEL DERK Time: 03:43pm \/To: KENYON TSE (Read 0 times) Subj: HOCKEY > Hey, there's GOTTA be some hockey fans out there in this echo... > TALK TO ME!! i'm a Canuck fan, and Pavel Bure's my favourite > player. i also live in Vancouver, so that works :) i'm not much of > a minor league fan... i'm mainly NHL, so if u got something to say, > say it to ME!!! Philly has had a great team but Lindros has to stay healthy this year. He always get hurt around playoffs. Hextall has been great all year. He has been over looked for the all star game. Pittsburg has a lot of great players. Where did Luline come from? I have never heard of him before this year. If Floridia is allowed to play their kind of game they will be tough too. The Rangers still aren't playing to their potential. They have great players and goalies. I don't know what is wrong with them. Did you watch the All Stars game.
