If you do No Yes No Yes Yes DW> reply to this message. Done! Sublime - Huge buzz about this band.. (although not as much as down in the states up here in Canada), but I've only heard 2 or 3 songs, and only liked 1.. they seem to have something against wearing shirts. Nirvana - Is there anything I can say that hasn't been said already?.. Dave Grohl happens to be my favorite person in the music industry.. 311 - "Down" is a sweet song.. everything else I've heard has been really lame. Radiohead - Brilliant band, saw them live 3 days ago. Amazing band, no-one else like them in the entire music industry. Thom Yorke is the one of the best singers in music today. Metallica - I didn't like most of their early stuff (Blackened and One were good), but they changed in the 90s and I'm a big fan of The Black Album and Load. They've gone too far with Reload, though. -*- TurboEDIT v1.60a+ [MSP96] --- Ezycom V1.48g0 01fa0167 * Origin: Milky Way, Langley, BC [604] 532-4367 (1:153/307) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 166 MUSIC Ref: F4F00008 Date: 04/10/98 From: RICK MCBROOM Time: 08:03am \/To: ALL (Read 0 times) Subj: Taj Mahal Senor Blues Taj Mahal has followed his musical vision quest since childhood By Ed Bumgardner When bluesman Taj Mahal was a small boy, he was rummaging around in a closet when he found something that made his heart beat fast - a shiny Silvertone electric guitar. Mahal had spent many rapt hours engrossed in his parent's mail- order catalog - the "Monkey Ward" catalog, as he used to call it - mooning over the guitar ads. Now, lo and behold, here was a guitar, sitting in a case, begging to be played. "I didn't know how to tune it, and I sure didn't know how to play it, but I knew that there were sounds in my head that-I could only make with that guitar," Mahal said. "From that day on, I'd sit under the stairs, with the the door closed'. and play that guitar. Then one day the door opens up, and my stepfather says, 'I see you found it."' Mahal laughed. "That's all he said. He never hassled me. So I just kept on playing guitar - and I haven't quit since." The lessons that Mahal, born Henry SaintClair Fredericks in 1942, learned on that guitar culminated this year with a Grammy award for his latest album, "Senor Blues." Mahal has been recording since 1968, but he has rarely sold more than 100,000 copies of any album. So to win a Grammy was, for Mahal, a validation of an often out-of-step musical vision that he feels he was born to follow. To study Mahal's sprawling recorded legacy is to gain insight into the evolution of black roots music in America. At various junctures of his career, Mahal's eclectic, all-embracing take on the blues, rooted in the scruffy sound of acoustic Delta blues, has veered off the beaten path to explore calypso, reggae, folk and rock. He has worked with a variety of bands, from a horn band featuring four tubas to a Caribbean steel-drum band. In 1965, he led one of the first blues-rock bands, The Rising Sons, which featured Ry Cooder on guitar. And he has worked alone, accompanying himself on guitar, kalimba, harmonica, piano, bass and banjo. Through the years, musical scholars have praised Mahal for reviving and preserving forms of overlooked roots music. From Mahal's perspective, he was merely retracing his roots. "Culturally I am a makeup of a lot of different things," he said. "My mother is from South Carolina, and my father is Jamaican. "So in my case, there is a connection into the Caribbean culture, and there is my roots in the South. The more I look back, the more I am knocked out by what I find. That connection has carried me through my life. As a musician, I felt that to lose out on what my ancestors took hundreds of years to develop, to not show it the proper respect, that would be a crime and a sin." ...
