Bands that the average Joe on the street GD> would label death. Machine Head, Fear Factory, etc. BB> Just call them METAL... nothing more, nothing less... they couldn't BB> possibly be death... I even have trouble calling most of them metal. When talking about Pantera, my mates and I usually call them things like "Poseura", "Pansera" or "Pooftera". :) Metallica is now called Plasstica, too. GD> vocals (a la Pantera) and almost deathy guitars(a la Sepultura). BB> Sepultura don't have 'deathy' guitars... their sound is influenced BB> more by speed and thrash.. on the never stuff maybe some 'metal' (read I mean in tones and not playing style. Sepultura (what I've heard, at least) has mostly very bassy guitar tones, rather like death bands. In style, they're nothing at all like death bands. BB> Well... but the true difference between DEATH metal and other forms of BB> metal is that it 'mainly' talks about death, afterlife, dying... and BB> Lets say some band would play their guitars and drums and bass like BB> Cannibal corpse, but talk about how wonderful the world is, talk about BB> flowers and daisies and butterflies and s..t. Would you call them a BB> DEATH band???? Yes, I would. What's the use in describing a band by their lyrics? It's useless. The lyrics aren't the music. Read the lyrics to Megadeth's "Good Mourning/Black Friday". Would you call that a deathmetal song? No! Why? Because, despite the lyrics, it's not deathy. If Alanis Morrisette started singing about decapitated and rotting corpses, would you call that death metal? Hell no! Lyrics don't make the music. The music does. Death metal got its name because of the subject matter, but if you're using it to describe the music then the subject matter is irrelevant. If as you say a band started singing about flowers and butterflies, but using Cannibal Corpse's style, how would you describe it to a friend who hadn't heard it? You'd say, "Well, it sounds like Cannibal Corpse." He'd say, "So it's death metal." You'd say, "No, they sing about butterflies." He'd say, "But you said they sound like Cannibal Corpse. What are they, then?" What would you say? You'd have to say they're death metal, wouldn't you? Just to let him understand what you mean? Hi Folks, I'm not sure if this is the right area for this query, so apologies if i'm in the wrong. Last year while on holiday in Italy I heard a Techno type song sung by kids but unfortunately was unable to track it down. It sounded like a nursery rhyme similar to the Clap Clap song. Here's how it went: "My dad's a soldier blue, i'll be a soldier too." Then it goes onto the following nursery rhyme. "My mother told me, if I was goodie, that she would buy me a rubber dolly, My auntie told her i'd kissed a soldier, now she won't buy me a rubber dolly." Then it went into the "Clap Clap verse and something to do with a Big Fat Hen. OK, I know it sounds like a horrible tune, but my wife would like to teach her Brownie pack how to sing it. It may be on a cd along with many other dance music hits of that year so if anyone can help, please get in touch.
