New Invention allows anyone to croon like Elvis By Mark Ward New York Times News Service Elvis lives - but only inside a computer. Ken Lomax of the University of Cambridge has developed a way to reproduce the singing and speaking styles of performers, living and dead. Lomax is working on applications for his technology, such as a karaoke machine that can make a person sound like his or her favorite singer and a synthesized voice for computers that can mimic film stars. Lomax's "voice morpher" uses a template of a performer's voice built up from the artist's recordings. The template captures features of the performer's distinctive singing style, such as how the words of a song are pronounced, the tone of the voice and the characteristic timing of certain phrases. So far, Lomax has generated templates for Maria Callas, Elvis and Kiri Te Kanawa. A karaoke machine using the morpher could convert the voice of anyone who stepped up to the microphone into that of Elvis, for example - or any other performer for whom a template had been created. The machine would preserve the timing of the karaoke singer but change the pitch and tone to make the person sound like the King. A spokesman for Isis Innovations, which is helping Lomax find commercial partners, says the system currently has two drawbacks - the time it takes to generate the template and the processing power required to blend the voices in real time. The time taken to generate templates is not critical to real-time performance, because they are created in advance. And while the prototype synthesizer takes time to convert the voices of karaoke singers, commercial versions will work instantaneously. Sony, Sharp and IBM are evaluating Lomax's system with a view to creating commercial products. IBM is considering using it to make computerized voices sound more human, According to the Isis spokesman, a karaoke machine using the voice morpher could make anybody sound more or less like a professional singer. "A song could be half me and half Elvis", he says, "Or 10 percent me and 90 percent Elvis." ... Presley is suing Grant for $5 million because Grant told author Suzanne Finstad and others that he had sex with her when she was 14 in return for his introducing her to Elvis. In her suit, Presley described Grant's claims as "vicious lies" that he has been spreading "for purposes of receiving money and some sort of notoriety so as to thereafter appear on television shows and to give further interviews in order to make money." Grant, her suit said, was, a groupie" and "hanger-on" in the 1950s who had contact with Elvis Presley while Elvis was in the Army. When Elvis cut Grant off, the suit said, Grant became "upset with (Priscilla Presley) and has a vendetta against her, believing that (she) was responsible for excluding Grant from any association, with Elvis Presley. Over the years, (Grant) has stalked and harassed (Priscilla Presley)... Grant is and was desperate for money and in dire financial straits. Because of Grant's financial condition, he would do anything for money, including, but not limited to, fabricating stories about (Priscilla Presley) for money." Grant, meanwhile, has countersued Presley for $5 million, claiming that her allegations against him are slanderous, false and defamatory. Grant's cross complaint alleges that Presley defamed him "in an effort to discredit him in an attempt to preserve the myths and hes that she created about herself, including, but not limited to, her false claim that she was a virgin when she married Elvis Presley." Presley's deposition is expected to be videotaped, but reporters are not expected to get a look it for some time - if at all. ...
