I'm a bassist! :) DL> sorry! Not at all mate. The more you got, the more I'd like to hear! :) DL> What's the range of a fretless bass? DL> 20 yards if you have a good arm All right, here are a few favourites: Q. What do you call a guitar player with brain damage? A. A bassist. I'm a fretless bassist, and my fingers are like lightning! (They never strike the same place twice...) Q. What's the definition of a gentleman? A. Someone who can play bass soloes, but doesn't. Hear about the latest crime wave? Drive-by bass soloes. Once, when gigging, a guy asked me how late our band plays. I said, about a half-beat behind the drummer. Q. How many lead guitarists does it take to screw in a light bulb? A. Ten. One to screw it in, nine to say, "I can do that!" (Guilty as charged!) Q. What's the difference between a lead guitarist and a terrorist? A. You can negotiate with a terrorist. Q. What's the difference between a lead guitarist and God? A. God doesn't think he's a lead guitarist. Q. What's the difference between drummers and government bonds? A. Government bonds eventually mature and earn money. Q. What did the drummer get on his IQ test? A. Drool. Q. What do lead singers use for birth control? A. Their personalities. Q. What's the difference between a singer and an onion? A. You cry when you chop up an onion. Q. What's the difference between a singer and a terrorist? A. Terrorists have sympathisers. And, finally, this is probably my favourite of all: Q. How many bassists does it take to change a light bulb? A. One, but the guitarist has to show him first. DL> Q: How does a singer screw in a light bulb? DL> A: He holds it in place and the world revolves around him! That's a good one! I've heard nothing but praise for DL> it, but I've heard two tracks and they sound like crap to me! I've heard bits of a couple of songs. It's not in the league of earlier Overkill, I don't think, but "Long Time Dyin'" sounds pretty good. I'll be buying it eventually so I'll let you know then. GD> Poison! Ugh! I've NEVER liked Poison. Nor Motley Crue or other DL> The music rocked! It was just cool bopping and foot tapping rock n DL> roll Oh well, I never liked it. I often called it "wank" music. Especially some Van Halen, with "Jump" and "Panama". That sort of thing makes me want to strangle someone. Motley Crue did some good stuff, like "Dr. Feelgood" and others, but overall I didn't like them at all. DL> "This is way better than countdown, it's got more of a live feel, it's GD> Live feel? But now they're all favourites. DL> Who are Skyclad? Didn't they put out 3 albums at once recently? Are DL> they some folk rock acoustic group now? I just wrote a review on Sabbat, which has a bit of info on Skyclad if I remember rightly. Skyclad are a strange and probably unique mix of very fast thrash metal and folk music. For lack of a better name I like to call them "pagan metal". If possible, get your hands on their first album, "Wayward Sons Of Mother Earth". That's by far their best, from what albums I've heard, and I'd give it five stars. Nearly all of it is heavy metal, no arguments, but with subtle old-style fiddles playing with the rhythm guitars and even a bit of lead. It's extremely well played and sounds great. Other medieval style instruments are used all the time, although they're generally very subtle. Tracks like "Skyclad" and "Terminus" leave you in no doubt that they're just as tough a metal band as any other, but skip back to "Moongleam And Meadowsweet" and you've got a very soft love-song (although he's singing about England, not a woman). But it's a good one, and not at all commercial. Then you skip to "The Widdershins Jig" which almost sounds like it came from the soundtrack of "Richard Lionheart" or something. Even though it's really strange, a lot of people call it their favourite! I don't really have a favourite but like them all. Other Skyclad albums like "Jonah's Ark" and "Prince Of The Poverty Line" aren't as good but still pretty solid. Most of those would get three stars or so from me. Musically, as time goes on Skyclad used more and more fiddles, but they're always used appropriately. "Prince.." in particular suffers from what you might call Megadeth Syndrome, in that the songs haven't really got enough melody or variety, and the production is a bit too perfect. It's still pretty good though. Many people worried that new recruit "Ripper" Owens would not be up to the job, for he had very big shoes to fill. These fears were groundless, for Owens had been frontman for Judas Priest tribute band British Steel and has a similar vocal style to Halford. Although the vocals are very similar to previous Priest, little else has remained. It's been seven years (or is it eight?) since their last album "Painkiller" blew speakers worldwide, and it shows. "Jugulator" is far heavier than anything they've done before, with thrash/death guitar and drum styles not unlike bands such as Sepultura or the new Testament. If your memory of Judas Priest is limited to "Rocka Rolla" you're in for a surprise. Even though they're not getting any younger (and looking more and more silly in leather-and-studs), they're sure as heck getting a lot heavier. Owens' vocals are brilliantly suited to this sort of music, snarling one minute and shrieking Halford-like the next. But for two things, "Jugulator" might have earned four and a half or even five stars from me. The first problem is the atrocious guitar soloes. Unlike the awesome Judas Priest trademark duelling leads of old, those on "Jugulator" are some of the worst I've ever heard. While the leads from Slayer and a few other thrash bands are chaotic, they still sound good and well suit the music. Those from Judas Priest's latest album are chaotic, poorly played, terribly mixed, and, frankly, embarrassing. One would expect better from two such experienced guitarists. The other problem, less important, is the occasional corny Anthrax-type vocal sections, such as the refrain in "Death Row". This I can live with. It's nowhere near as much of a problem as on, say, Overkill's "W.F.O.". Judas Priest have handled the change to modern metal admirably. Owens fills Halford's spacious shoes very well, not trying to sound precisely like the vocallist he replaced but instead using his voice to its capacity. Like I said, without the poor leads and odd corny vocal section, "Jugulator" might rate five stars. However I must, very reluctantly, drop it down to three and a half.
