RM> Cool! _Rio Grande Mud_ doesn't show up in the used bins often, so you RM> were pretty lucky there. It's the only ZZ album I've ever seen used, except the "Greatest Hits" one. GD>>> ..their breakthrough album "Eliminator".. RM>> I consider _Tres Hombres_ to be their breakthrough album. GD> Yeah, maybe. RM> No doubt about it.. Trust me! It may be that I'm slightly biased, or perhaps misinformed, since many groups that you would call huge never made it over the puddle here. Although I'm too young to remember it, I don't think ZZ Top ever did a whole lot over here before "Eliminator". GD> That had "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" on it, right? RM> No, "..Nationwide" is from _Deguello_. [confused] OK. That's a great song, by the way. GD> But "Eliminator" did have the big three on it, that really hit GD> the big time. RM> Yeah, but after _Tres Hombres_, ZZ was Hot with a capital "H". The RM> next one, _Fandango_, had an even bigger (radio) hit in "Tush". Oh, yeah, I'd forgotten "Tush". All right, you've got me over a barrel now. :) RM> And _Tres Hombres_ is still my all-time fav ZZ album. It's a RM> jen-you-wine masterpiece, IMHO. "Waitin' for the Bus", "Jesus Just RM> Left Chicago", and "La Grange" were huge hits, and "Beer Drinkers & I know and love "La Grange", and the first two you mention sound familiar although I can't remember how they go. RM> I can tell you that it was impossible to go to a party in 1973 and RM> /not/ hear _Tres Hombres_! ;-) :) RM> _Eliminator_, to me, is the album that turned them into RM> caricatures... I liked it, and still sort of do, but I'm slowly going off it because of the computer-ey beat. GD>>> ..pumping out solid blues-based rock.. RM>> Right-o. And some of those tunes are straight blues, IMHO. Or so RM> "Mushmouth.." and "Apologies..", but "Sure Got Cold.." ain't nothin' RM> BUT the blues! Having just re-listened, I'll agree with all you said here. But I'm not about to move one inch on "Lazy". :) :) RM> BTW, ZZ Top, and especially Billy Gibbons, are great blues fans, and RM> are to be lauded for their efforts in preserving the blues. Because of that song, I've gone right into the power/speed-metal thing instead of thrash and death. The recent Testament album "Demonic" has helped get into the Sepultura-Entombed type stuff a bit. DL> Just 100% cocky attitude all the way! Kinda reminds you why you got into it all in the first place, huh? Listening to "Seek And Destroy" still sends shivers up my spine. If only I'd had the money then that I have now, to buy the albums. As it is I only bought my first one some six or eight years ago. Up till then it was borrow and tape, I'm afraid.
