Utterly hummable but at the same time original and very experimental. Great entertainment even when played separately. Delightfully insane. Free Kitten: SENTIMENTAL EDUCATION cd ****- - At first something of a disappointment due to the lack of fu**ked- up noisey blues found on the first record, but the odd and twirly remixes by nyc triphop gurus and such make this, after a brief period of acceptance and admiration, perhaps even more outre than that first one. Dazzling, funky and plain entertaining. Major Stars: ROCK SOUNDS OF PEOPLE 12" ****- - Something of a revelation, this one. Opens up in a droney fashion, with nominally common toons with a bit of guitar skronk and such. What makes this so exceptional then is basically two songs that out- do any and every mindbending fuzztone stuzzadelically twisted space- out guitar noise. Ululating ear-pierce on a grand scale. Paul D. Miller: VIRAL SONATA *** - This nyc underground dub/ambient/jungle/trip-hop guru aka DJ Spooky is among my first encounters with such musical vistas, but it's one I'll DEFINITELY be visiting again. Lovely, energetic and enigmatic psy-phi soundscapes. Geraldine Fibbers: BUTCH cd *** - A wonderful opening track and a spicy Can-cover make this a very recommendable entry. Nels Cline gets to turn up his guitar in a rather enjoyable fashion. A bit too much of a mixed bag of goodies, so a few misses make it less than it could've been. Groovy in-yer-nose action packed cowpunk. The Cramps: BIG BEAT FROM BADSVILLE lp *** - A welcome return to the old days and ways; Ivy gets to screech her strings and the last few toons get into a spasmodic rockabilly hiccup unheard of in these days. Ancient juvenile delinquents from beyond the rim of known space. Stay Sick! Turn Blue! Top 10 of 1997 retro-buys: Giant Sand: Love Songs lp **** - I always though of 'Valley of Rain' as their absolute peak, but I'm the first one to admit my being in error. Quirky, perhaps, but ravishing and full of joy. I read somebody's testimony of quitting smoking with this album, and it makes perfect sense. Giant Sand: Center of the Universe cd **** - sheer brilliance; rapturously played, varying from brief bursts of energetic hardcore to jazz, while being at the same time a very traditional album. insightfilled lyrics. I always get this wonderful, strange feeling of crying with happiness when Howe starts singing about "Good cop Yang and bad cop Yin. Strap on cuffs and take take him on in". And I've recited 'Loretta and the Insect World' aloud dozens of times. Happy sad ? Loren MazzaCane Connors/Suzanne Langille: Crucible cd ****- - ethereal space blues guitar combined with likewise personal vocals. I need to explore these personae more. Hampton Grease Band: Music to Eat 2cd ****- - a truly wonderful, Beefheartesque band, with jerky but flowing rhythms and a worthy guitar or few. Nels Cline Trio: CHEST cd ****- - odd structures and friction-inducing guitarsound in a jazzed-wayup buzzsaw tunes. Exhilarating and from my pow unique. Ikue Mori w. Robert Quine, Marc Ribot: PAINTED DESERT ****- - a beautifully translucent record, soundscapes created by the ethereal yet concrete and fluid guitars of Quine and Ribot, held together by ms. Mori's percussive structures. Moby Grape: '69 lp ***% - a GREAT, traditional record, full of beautiful and spicy songs. Yoko Ono/IMA: RISING cd ***% - caught me completely unawares; quirky and experimental, yet full of beautifully perky rok und rawl. Surprise opening. Neutral Milk Hotel: ON AVERY ISLAND cd ***% - philosophical and personal psychedelia; great songs and a cool, vibrant vibe. OOIOO: st lp ***% - Yoshimi of the Boredoms screams and trumpets with her new band. Unique jerky odd-popp, punky jungle. -- jlin@xgw.fi http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Delphi/9171 --- Platinum Xpress/Win/Wildcat5! v2.0 * Origin: The NeverEnding BBS/Deltona,FL/407-860-7720/bbs.never (1:3618/555) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 166 MUSIC Ref: F1R00036 Date: 01/19/98 From: DELIA KETCHERSIDE Time: 02:27am \/To: SEAN DENNIS (Read 0 times) Subj: Re: Camoflauge?
