--------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 166 MUSIC Ref: EGQ00020 Date: 12/20/97 From: JENNIFER SHARWARD Time: 05:56pm \/To: ALL (Read 0 times) Subj: Duran2 in concert I have been very busy recently so I'm late in getting out my comments on this one, but I wanted to mention that I saw Duran Duran Thanksgiving evening in Orlando (Pleasure Island at Downtown Disney). I felt quite privliged as it would be a month before the band would be in my own town (and we had debated whether we were going to buy tickets or not), and many of the concerts held at Pleasure Island are included in the price of admission. We got in and claimed a space as soon as we could get through the gate, and it was a good thing, too, because it ended up being a packed show. The majority of the people attending would likely be considered those who grew up with the music, so they were there to hear the old songs. (I would venture to guess that most of the people in the audience were *not* familiar with any "Electric Barbarella" material. Keith and I have been contemplating purchase of the album, but my sister was familiar with one or two songs through the radio.) The band opened with new material - and it just about went over like a lead balloon. I honestly don't know what song it was, but, instinctively, I didn't care much for it, either. All I can say about it is that it had distorted vocals and a lot of sampling, and it began with Nick talking and acting as though he was reading the paper. The rest of the night was a rotation between old material and new material. Though others in the audience might not have been impressed, some of the new songs performed later on were more appealing to me. Songs I did recognize included "Hungry Like the Wolf," "Ordinary World," "Come Undone," "Save a Prayer," (dedicated to Michael Hutchence, whose funeral they had attended a day earlier), and "Rio." Simon LeBon commented that some of the music they were going to play was 15-year-old material they had expected to ever play again. (The funny thing is that most people in attendance didn't seem familiar with those songs - they were singing along with everything else they knew - but my husband did know all the words to even those. I'm told that two of the songs were from the very first album.) The set was approximately 1 1/2 hours long and seemed tight. Simon was very active on stage, at times eliciting giggles from the audience when it appeared that he was almost making love to himself! The show had its high and low points, most often related to the age of the material itself. The best received tunes were the most well known '80s era songs. Overall, though, my personal take was that it was a good show. GD> What the world needs is a CD jukebox where you can input the artist, GD> album title, tracklist etc. and program what you want. Heck, they've GD> got the technology to put all that on the CD itself! Why don't they? RM> Pioneer and Sony already make such changers. They have 'file' RM> memories so you can group certain albums into 'folders', or rearrange RM> the default play order, even block out a song that you NEVER want to RM> hear again. Sounds cool. I can do that on my computer now (although sound quality is naturally a frag lacking). But, what I meant was, you could encode those details on the CD so you don't have to type them in. Even a text file that had artist, label, album name, track names, track numbers, and track times would be immensely helpful. It wouldn't take much for a hi-fi CD player to read that sort of thing directly from the CD. RM>> A simple shelf is the only way to go, as you can slide them over, RM>> or grab a double handfull. Same as Sabbat used to be with Martin Walkyire (who is now in Skyclad).. "The Best Of Enemies", "Do Dark Horses Dream Of Nightmares?", "Irrational Anthems", "Prince Of The Poverty Line", "Thinking Allowed", "History Of A Time To Come", "The Church Bizarre", etc. etc. etc. Still, most of Skyclad and all of Sabbat are excellent music, so it shouldn't put you off.
