TB> and what their use is, Almost universally, they are useless. Try opening them with an editor, one at a time. Broken text files can be reassembled, if necessary, but for the vast majority of PC users, the lost chains are beyond recovery. They are also usually unimportant, and result from a crash or hasty shut-down of PC's (you can get lots of them and numerous temp files in temp direc- tories by shutting off Win3.x & Win95 systems without following normal exit procedures). TB> and how many of them, if any, can be deleted? Most likely every single one can be eliminated, and next time you run Scandisk, tell it to delete the "lost chains" instead of saving them. Computer basics: Lesson 1 - Corrupted files. There are many ways to create errors on the Hard Disk. One way is by using older DOS programs have no idea what Win95 "long filenames" are. Another way is by not shutting down Win95 properly, which can leave some files "open", and might create "cross-links". This is when two or more files decide the next chunk of themselves is in a spot on the HD already claimed by another file, much like a newspaper typo where 6 articles say "continued on page 5", but only 1 really does. Running CHKDSK/F, or SCANDISK with the appropriate options will attempt to fix the problem by choosing 1 of the files as "correct", and updating the FAT (File Allocation Table) to match this decision, and saving the other chunks as filexxxx.chk, so you can view and possibly recover any important info from them. Since these programs have no way to know which chunk is the "correct" one, you might find half of one file joined with half of another, therefore corrupt and unuseable. The only way to fix this is to re-load the affected files, or delete and re-install the program those corrupted files belong to. I much prefer SCANDISK, as it is more configurable, has the option to "undo" what it just did, asks before it does anything, and keeps a detailed log of exactly what it just did. * SLMR 2.1a * --- Maximus 3.01 * Origin: The BandMaster, Vancouver, B.C., Canada (1:153/7715) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 163 WORD PERFECT Ref: F5G00045 Date: 04/18/98 From: GREG EASTHOM Time: 09:56pm \/To: TED BRIGHTMAN (Read 3 times) Subj: Previous message TB>Please forgive me for the last message I posted. My hard drive at work recently developed 3 bad spots, all of which (of course) corrupted executables, one of which was the WP.EXE file (WPD 5.1+). I solved the problem by copying the file to a floppy from another system on which it was installed then copying it back to my hard drive. (Did the same thing with the other two corrupted files.) * Silver Xpress V4.4P [Reg] --- Platinum Xpress/Win/Wildcat5! v2.0 * Origin: Get Your Fido Fix Here. telnet://docsplace.dyn.ml.org (1:3603/140) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 163 WORD PERFECT Ref: F5G00047 Date: 04/14/98 From: CHARLES BLAKLEY Time: 10:17am \/To: MIEMIE BOOYSEN (Read 3 times) Subj: Book for wordperfect Miemie, I missed reading your inquiry about a good book on WordPerfect the first time around. I've purchased several books on using WordPerfect over the years. My favorite, and the easiest to use in my opinion, is "WordPerfect for Dummies". I think it was written for me. I have "Mastering WordPerfect 5.1", "The ABC's of WordPerfect 5.1", and "The First Book of WordPerfect 5.1". While the first of these goes into the details of the program better than the others, for ease of use it is the "Dummies" series that have helped me the most.
