Answers: 1) What is the latest version of WP8? The latest version is Revision B, available only on CD-ROM by mail from Corel. The latest service pack for this version is Service Pack 2, available by ftp at Corel's website. Revision A of WP8 was shipped with a voucher entitling the customer to order the update CD-ROM for $10 (shipping and handling). However, since the order is placed by telephone, only the serial number is really needed to place an order for the CD-ROM. The Rev. B CD-ROM contains the entire WP8 suite (so you can install on top of Rev. A, or entirely afresh) including an improved Quickfinder, plus an initial release of Corel Central personal information manager. SP1 is to be applied only to Rev. A. SP2 is to be applied only to Rev. B. Rev. B includes SP1. 'Help'->'About WordPerfect' release numbers: Rev. A: Program: 8.0.0.153 PerfectFit: 8.0.0.153 Rev. A + SP1: Program: ? PerfectFit: ? Rev. B: Program: 8.0.0.225 PerfectFit: 8.0.0.225 Rev. B + SP2: Program: 8.0.0.268 PerfectFit: 8.0.0.272 An early version of SP2 failed to copy the file Pfit80.dll to the right place, leaving PerfectFit as release # 8.0.0.225. This can be rectified by copying Pfit80.dll from \Corel\Suite8\Shared\Componts over \Corel\Suite8\Programs\Pfit80.dll. Most participants in the WP8 newsgroup agree that Rev. B is an improvement over Rev. A and is worth ordering. Most agree that Corel Central is not very usable in its present form. 2) How do I update the integrated Netscape from ver. 4.01a to 4.03? Right now, you can't. Rumor has it that Corel will do something to make this possible before the end of the year. In the meantime, note that you can load both the Corelized Netscape and a standard Netscape onto your system. 3) I get a invalid page or protection fault when installing WP8; why? When installing WP8 (and 7) you must have a default printer driver installed otherwise the new install will either Invalid Page Fault or will show an error message. Users have reported many problems installing WP8 and are sometimes able to overcome them simply by trying again. For more information read Corel's installation FAQ at: http://205.227.112.10/scripts/faqs/cwps8_faq.idc or search the Knowledge Base at: http://www.corel.com/products/wordperfect/cwps8/support.htm or post a question to the peer-support newsgroup: news://cnews.corel.com/corel.support.wordperfect8suite.wordperfect 4) I get an invalid page fault when starting WP8. What do I do? Search for the name of the module and/or the location of the page fault in the Knowledge Base. If that reveals nothing, try posting your problem to the WP8 newsgroup. Include the module and address of the fault in your posting. If the fault occurs only with a particular document, see the answer to the question about crashing with a particular document. If the fault occurs on scrolling, see the answer to the question about crashing while scrolling. If the fault occurs on starting up WP8, (1) make sure that you have a real printer selected as the Windows 95 default, not a fax device. (2) Try renaming the default template; WP8 will create a new one. The old one may be corrupt. (3) Try deseleting 'Save workspace'. (4) Try reinstalling the printer driver or selecting or installing another one (e.g., the HP LaserJet Series II). The most common cause of such crashes is conflicts with video drivers. Many users have eliminated such problems by updating their video driver, downloading it from the Microsoft website or from the website of their video card manufacturer. If that does not work, one can invoke WP8 with the '/FL' command-line switch. This causes WP8 to avoid using certain off-screen areas of video memory. The downside is that the display may exhibit flickering. Corel also suggests using the '/li' and '/dm=s' command-line switches. To try these switches, create a shortcut to WordPerfect (by, e.g., right-clicking on the Start button, clicking on 'Open', double-clicking on the WordPerfect Suite 8 folder, and ctrl-dragging the WP8 shortcut to the desktop) and edit its properties (by right-clicking on the shortcut, clicking on Properties, clicking 'Shortcut', and adding ' /fl /li /dm=s' (with spaces) to the end of what is in the 'Target' text box). If you have a memory manager listed in your config.sys file, try excluding memory range b000-cfff. If crashing occurs only with a particular document, see the answer to question about crashing with a particular document. Also recommended is bringing Windows 95 up to date with all and sundry patches available on the Microsoft website, including Service Pack 1 for Windows 95, OLE32 update, and KERNEL32 update. References: Knowledge Base doc. # 4252 "Switches to work around video probs": http://205.227.112.10/allacdocs/4252.htm 6) What if I have crashes while editing a particular document? You may have a damaged document. For advice on how to repair the document, see Knowledge Base article # 668096, "Troubleshooting Guide For Damaged Documents": http://205.227.112.10/allacdocs/668096.htm David Seidman ( http://www.ase.com/seidman ) has some file utilities for dealing with corrupt WP files. The damage may have been caused by a video driver conflict. To eliminate these conflicts, please see the answer to the question about crashing while scrolling. Crashing can also occur when editing a document with old or invalid codes. Loading the document, copying and pasting to a new document with either 'Paste special... unformatted text' or another importing technique may resolve this quickly. This is particularly true of WP8 Rev. A. 7) Corel Central is slow. Can it be speeded up? Select 'Tools -> Use Corel Central Lite'. This can improve performance and stability but you lose World Wide Web features because the integrated Netscape browser is not loaded. Other than this there is little you can do. The initial release of Corel Central with WP8 Suite Rev. B just is slow, even on powerful hardware. 8) I had difficulty downloading SP2. How do I get the whole file? Divide the number of bytes reported in the FTP index by 1024 to calculate the number of kilobytes you should receive. If the download process has received that many kilobytes by the time it hangs up, you may be able to kill the process and still use the patch file. Some participants in the newsgroup recommend the program "Netvampire" for downloading files. It is available at: http://www.zdnet.com/cgi-bin/texis/swlib/hotfiles/info.html?fcode=000HDR 9) How do I add a word to the document word list from spell checker? In the Spell checker, click on 'Skip All'. 10) I bought the Academic version. How do I get technical support? First, read this FAQ. Second, search the Knowledge Base for keywords related to your problem: http://www.corel.com/products/wordperfect/cwps8/support.htm Third, post your problem in the WP8 peer-support newsgroup: news://cnews.corel.com/corel.support.wordperfect8suite.wordperfect and advice may be forthcoming from other WP users. 11) How do I get QuickFinder to use indexes? To get QuickFinder to work with its indexes in WPWin8.0 Professional Suite: Once you create an index, you have to go back to the opening search menu (CTRL+O and click on ADVANCED). The box at the top of the menu should have the name of the directory you have designated as the default for your documents. Click on it and scroll UP to the very top of the directory tree, above C: and even above Desktop, where you will find CUSTOM INDEXES. Hit the right arrow key or click on the + sign and you will see a list of the indexes you've created. Select the one you want and double-click on it. Now you should be back to the advanced find menu. Double-click on the words INSERT NEW PROPERTY and enter the information for the search you want to perform. Hit enter and double- click again on new property is you want to add a second search criterion, such as an AND OR or NOT. Once that's done, click on FIND NOW and you'll get the list of files within your index that contain the words for which you're searching. Use QuickView 4, which comes with WPWin8 Pro but must be installed separately (I think) for a quick scan of the documents you've found. It's all pretty slick, albeit not intuitive and not properly covered in the help menus. 12) When I exit WP8 it remains in memory. Solution? Make sure the default folder has at least one file in it. 13) Does anyone from Corel participate in this newsgroup? Occasionally a lurking Corel employee will reveal his or her presence. However the purpose of the newsgroup is peer support. Check the Corel website for e-mail support options. 14) My displayed characters are often "run together". Solution? Try starting WP with the /dm=90 switch. You can vary the number following the equals sign until you are happy with the display pitch. 15) I keep inadvertently moving the margins. How do I prevent this? Select 'View'->'Guidelines...'. Uncheck the 'Drag to move guidelines' checkbox and click 'OK'. --- FleetStreet 1.21+ * Origin: -- eXpress >< conneXions -- bancroft, ontario (1:253/60) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 163 WORD PERFECT Ref: EFG00000 Date: 11/10/97 From: GREG EASTHOM Time: 10:01pm \/To: ALL (Read 5 times) Subj: Wp 6.0 Dos Good evening, ALL. A couple of years ago, I got a copy of WP6.0 for DOS, as Mom was tired of flipping back & forth in 5.1 to see what the output would look like, and wanted to try WYSIWYG without having to resort to Windoze. This "updated" version seems in some ways inferior to 5.1. - It gets all-too-regular screen freezes, requiring reboots. - "Unknown codes" occasionally appear in documents. - Spell-checking (I've heard of this bug) once lost most of a document, and re-opening what was left froze the machine. - "View document" takes forever (relatively) to load something that would be almost instant in 5.1, and scrolling around while viewing is a joke... it re-writes the entire screen instead of just the new portion as 5.1 would. Even multi-page thumbnails take too long, particularly if graphic images are involved. - When faxing, I can schedule a fax to be sent tomorrow, but there is no way to cancel that "pending" fax from inside WP. Also, there's no documentation on *receiving* faxes so I had to figure it out all by myself (boo-hoo). - Overall, it seems to be slower than 5.1 for most tasks, even though I've done what the manual suggested to maximize speed, like loading WP.FIL into memory at run-time (I've got 16 megs). Enough crying, on to the questions... I've seen mentions here of 6.0a, 6.0b, and 6.2, all for DOS. Are these bug-fixes, upgrades, or just WPcorp/Novell/Corel logo changes? Do they address any of the points I've mentioned? I went from 5.1 to 6.0a (DOS). I too wanted to get WYSIWYG advantages. At that time 6.0a had "fax" problems that 6.0b was supposed to address. Maybe this explains the current problem you are having with 6.0. I didn't need the FAX features, but I grabbed the next upgrade by that time: 6.0c. I reported a font rendering problem in one of the character sets I was using. At that time Novell was nice enough to send me a free 6.0c version at the time. I had a few rough starts in 6.0c (it needed more memory resources and a *much* higher FILES= value) but since then I've had no problems with it. BTW.. I was and still am using WP 6.0c in an OS/2 DOS environment. .:. /ug --- FleetStreet 1.21+ * Origin: -- eXpress >< conneXions -- bancroft, ontario (1:253/60) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 163 WORD PERFECT Ref: EFH00001 Date: 11/10/97 From: COLIN STEWART Time: 10:23pm \/To: KRIS STEENHAUT (Read 4 times) Subj: Contacting WordPerfect Hello, Kris!
