I was able to figure out most of the settings and things, with two exceptions: (1) the startup switches, which I found in a couple books in a used book store, and also by trying switches I knew were available for later versions. Curiously, the /ws option worked as expected, but wasn't mentioned in either book I found that listed the startup switches. (2) How to create a "directory alias" (a descriptive name for a directory). I figured out how to make long (descriptive) filenames and list files by those without any difficulty, but I couldn't figure out how to make descriptive names for directories (in 6.0 and later versions, this is a built in feature I'm familiar with). The online help said to consult the reference manual, in "directories", which was not an option. I found EIGHT books on Word Perfect 5.1 for DOS and earlier versions in the used book store, but NONE of them mentioned directory aliases. E.g: the pair of tags and are a perfect match for a 'closed' style and
is perfect for an 'open' style. In this way you can setup styles for al basic types of HTML tags. And you van do something similar with 'simple' WP codes like [LARGE][large] etc, using etc. This is the way I started doing it. A problem with this method is that a number of tags have parameters. Like in the above example with . For this reason I have a second set of styles in which all tags are closed styles so the parameters can be put inside. The macros are mainly for converting and validating. Many are based on the following fragment: {style}9Stylename{Enter}1 which looks for the style Stylename and activates it. Ultimately a WP file which is to be saves as ascii only contains plain ascii characters, a LOT of styles and a few loose hard and soft returns. The only problem which I can't solve is that when I scan with a macro through a file and detect an open style I can't find out _which_ open style that is. For closed styles the good old {system}29~ works perfectly but for open styles that does not work :-( Greetings from _____ /_|__| Auke Reitsma, Delft, The Netherlands. / | \ -------------------------------------- email: Auke.Reitsma@net.HCC.nl --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: Home by the C (2:281/400.20) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 163 WORD PERFECT Ref: DGC00001 Date: 12/07/96 From: BRUCE WILSON Time: 07:27am \/To: KURT FOSTER (Read 6 times) Subj: Re: ancient history question On 5 Dec 96 01:43pm, Kurt Foster wrote to All: KF> I found that listed the startup switches. There is one, "Mastering WP5.1 DOS", or something close, that really gets into some of the lessor known techniques. Another called "Tips & Tricks for WP5.1" You may find what you need in one of them. You might check to see if your library has an online catalog and you can just call from home, search the catalog, and then reserve it. Also, our metro library system has a used book sale once a year and you can find some of them there at a reasonable cost. Why couldn't *I* think of using that filename????? ;-) Believe it or not, I HAD thought of creating a file of 2-field records (it was the only obvious thing I could think of in WP51DOS that seemed likely to work), but was unable to figure out how to tell WP how to make use of it in its directory listings. I found 2 more books on WP51 since posting my query, and they didn't have anything about directory aliases either. Anyhow, I downloaded your answer and tried the method you described. It does work.
