Try running a SCANDISK to check the drive. I think that error has to do with the disk in the floppy drive. I have my "A:" drive designated as the drive for WP Docs. If I open WP and then open an old DOC from the floppy; everything is fine BUT if I swap floppies and try to record the DOC, I believe I get the "DOS ERROR 36" message. I take it to mean "This is not the floppy you used to open the document and I'm not going to do anything until you use THAT floppy to record your document". My way out is to "F7" and write the file to the original floppy, then "Cancel" when it asks if I want to exit WP. After that, I can put another floppy in the "A:" drive and use "F10" to record the document. NOTE: I got used to computers using the old TRS-80 where everything was "recorded" on a cassette tape so the "record" terminology is still stuck in my mind. I remember many years ago when I worked in TV repairs. We had a new customer in a new house in a certain development with a "broke" TV. I went out and there was nothing. I knew the development better than she did. I said "which of these two wall switches turns on the wall plug?" She insisted one turned on the light in the rear of the carport and the other turned on the light in the front of the carport. I practically had to fight her to be able to turn the switches on - and on came the TV. One was for the wall plug, the other for both lights. *:o) FIDO: Bill White @ 1:135/110 (Miami) InterNet: bill.white@110.sunshine.com * SLMR 2.1a * (-: Smiling out of the other side of your mouth! --- Maximus 2.01wb * Origin: Miami Amateur Computer Club BBS/USR Courier V.E (1:135/110) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 163 WORD PERFECT Ref: DARI0327 Date: 06/21/96 From: FREDERICK SOHN Time: 02:54pm \/To: KEN BLAKE (Read 10 times) Subj: Wild Indent in 6.0 Ken: I said that "full justification saves paper." You responded that "full justification tends to expand lines to fill out the allotted space, rather than contract them to get more words on the line." I'm right for WP 5.1 for DOS with my setup (proportional fonts, kerning enabled, automatic hyphenation without prompting, narrow hyphenation zones, "normal" word and letter spacing). You're right for WP 6.x for DOS, where the full justification algorithm was changed to vary word spacing _before_ trying to use hyphenation. This is the main reason I can't use WP 6.x for DOS:--for my work the spaced-out typesetting is unacceptable. (I begged and stormed for a patch or option, to no avail.) Roberta: You remark to Wayne Popiluk that when "a WP driver screws me up and prevents me from using the full capability of my printer, I fudge things by setting up a new paper size." A neater way, if your version of WP has a bundled utility to edit WP printer drivers (PTR.EXE in WP 5.1 for DOS). is to fire it up, retrieve (Shift-F10) the printer driver, enter, go into "Miscellaneous Numbers," change the figures to the minima the printer is physically capable of handling, exit (F7) and say "yes" when prompted whether to save the file. The printer group in Orem used to be very good at writing printer drivers. When did they start messing up? When Anne enlightened Phil Heberer about wpwin60 margins? AK>Phil - Your suggestion is well taken. However, when I use 8 1/2x14 I AK>have no problems other than to remember where to cut off the message. It is all well and good that you do this, BUT someday it is going to jump up and bite you if you're using a laser printer. This "minimum margin" setting is based on the printer manufacturer's recommendation. The reason is simple! While a laser printer may be able to drop toner closer to the edge of the paper, it doesn't necessarily follow the the FINISH section of the printer can adequately FIX the toner to the page. I have a client who thought he was being CUTE, and made the setting zero, and controlled the margins in each document. Well, his people began to use the margins closer and closer until one day the printer stopped working. There was enough toner in the FINISH are to fill a toner cartridge. So beware of being too cute with these settings. Another consideration is that some manufacturers, especially HP, are constantly tweaking their hardware to reduce the minimum margins. Thus, for example, the HP4's minimum margin has changed by HP, reducing it by almost .15" since the release of the printer. WP rarely gets notices of these changes, and the driver are not updated unless the manufacturer does so. The Windows drivers on the other hand, are usually updated regularly. The moral, consider minimum margins carefully before making changes. shattuck@execpc.com via Windows 95 CMPQwk 1.42 #329 ... As such one line can have 63 char and another 52 on it. --- PCBoard (R) v15.21/M 5 * Origin: The Black Bag * Memphis, TN (1:123/410)
