Well he does understand topic sentences. But this is the skill they are teaching in 5th grade. Actually they start teaching it in 4th grade. He had a tough time then too. It will work out. I put alot of learning games on the computer this week. Some of them are games a friend had bought and is no longer in need of them. So she gave them to me. They are by dinosoft. Not bad. Also some electronic reading program. It is kinda nice. Some of it is really easy stuff, but I figure the easy stuff should help review as well as give them self confidence. Regina ... I picked up a set of Alfred's Basic Piano Library Flashcards Levels 1a/1b at a yard sale last Sat. for 50cents. Don't know that they're something I'll use, but snatched them on the chance they might be later.... I also got a red plastic pull sled for Amanda and Margaret to ride in when it snows (next week or so ). Actually, we've already had flurries here - the day the movers brought my household!!! It was mixed with rain and sleet and didn't stick though. The weather here is very changeable. We'll be going on a homeschool field trip on Thurs. pm - and 1800's train ride (coal burner!). Don't know if we'll learn anything but it should be fun. Our history book is at Native Americans. We found the local library yesterday and I got a stack of good books of legends and the like for us to read as supplements. Each of the older girls got their own library card as well. I think we'll be happy here. I've got to quit yakking and get some work done! TTYL! Theresa ... I am strong! I am woman! Do you follow me? I'm not trying to criticize, ust > know that sometimes a better effort is made if things are left > open-ended. Hmmm....let me answer this one slightly differently. I went back and looked at my own response from earlier and realize now that it's probably left you more confused than ever. (grin) Me too. (bigger grin) My oldest daughter (5th grade) likes school, and always has. I am still not certain that being IN school is the best thing for her. When I first mentioned homeschool to her, she was hesitant about leaving school behind. Though she is often the recipient of teasing, etc., she brushes it off quite well and "hangs in there". She enjoys going to school anyway because of the activities they do. Though I think if I pulled them out in the middle of this year, she'd go without problems, she's still wanting to stay in school. My younger daughter (4th grade) hasn't liked school for a couple of years. Most of it has been social life, but she also has been somewhat bored, especially in the area of reading. Both she and her sister are top-notch readers. The difference is, tho, the older one will just read ahead or (probably) hide a book inside her textbook, like I used to do. My younger one will not do that, but complains about how "yucky" the book is, etc. When I was considering what to do about this, homeschool was one of the options I was looking at. Right now it still doesn't look likely - I work two part-time jobs because this area's cost-of-living is so obnoxious. However, if it became possible to homeschool, I still might do so. I just don't know at this point whether it would be both daughters, or just the younger one. Does that make sense now? Maybe I better not write responses before 8 in the morning any more (grin).... -donna --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: The Education Station, Poway, CA - Mail Only (1:202/211) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 158 HOME SCHOOLING Ref: DE300003Date: 10/02/96 From: DONNA RANSDELL Time: 12:00pm \/To: CHRIS GILLILAND (Read 2 times) Subj: Summer break?? > Six Flags gang-infested??? :( LOVELY, *real* > good... It was returned to the "OK" list last year. Disneyland has always had a dress code and a code of what can and cannot be brought into their park. It's been only recently that Six Flags Magic Mountain has instituted something similar. Six Flags MM is offering a homeschoolers day at their park. I haven't heard of Disneyland doing the same, but they're open weekdays during the school year (and Six Flags MM is not). -donna --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: The Education Station, Poway, CA - Mail Only (1:202/211)
