I think he is 8? Time to worry > about backwards b and d is grade 2, usually if it continues beyond then it > could mean a learning disability. Ruth has a good point. Another thing you can do to help him is a little "pnemonics". On an 8x11" tagboard or construction paper, draw a lower case b. Make the letter good and thick. Then, using yellow and black markers, draw this "b" into a "bee". On another 8x11" tagboard, draw a lower case d. Make the letter good and thick. Then, using brown and other colors, draw this "d" into a "dog". (I'd send you a picture of what I mean if I had your mailing address, but I don't. You can netmail it to me at 202/211 or email me at dransdell@worldnet.att.net.) Then, post these in the room where he does most of his written work. Put the B on the left, and the D on the right of him, according to the direction he faces when writing at his seat. I had several kids in 2nd grade who had difficulty with b's and d's. I wouldn't really worry about it until he's in 3rd grade, and even then it will depend on his consistency and if he's trying to use the "system" you've established for it. -donna --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: The Education Station, Poway, CA - Mail Only (1:202/211) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 158 HOME SCHOOLING Ref: DDW00040Date: 09/26/96 From: NOLAN PENNEY Time: 04:21pm \/To: JAMES PRIOR (Read 2 times) Subj: Re: unknown gun stuff Why did you reply to an obviously missrouted message and waste my time? I have nine years of post secondary education Each of the 50 states (and, I believe, the District of Columbia) requires a teaching certificate or credential good only in that state, in order to teach in the public schools. All of the states require a bachelor's degree, but they can't agree on what courses are required in order to teach. A teacher who changes state of residence and wants to teach in the new state usually ends up going back to college/university for some such course! Some states, such as California, even require testing - to get my Clear Credential here I had to take the CBEST, the general NTE, and six different 3 hour courses. Do I think these made me any better teacher? Probably not. I probably gained some knowledge, and maybe some practical things to take into the classroom. But I don't think a degree or a credential makes me any better a teacher. (I just happened to take all those classes, paid for and took $140 worth of tests, and then paid another $70 for the piece of paper that California says makes me qualified to teach in their schools.) > QMPro 1.53 For adult education, nothing beats > children Good tagline. I'm really curious about how many of the ISP teachers really, down deep inside, approve of what homeschoolers do. I often wonder if some of them are just taking "a few years out of the classroom" for a break, in the form of an administration position in order not to lose tenure (or, as is a big problem in this state) job status completely. I'm sure this is purely a rhetorical question - I doubt if I'd ever get a real answer. -donna --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: The Education Station, Poway, CA - Mail Only (1:202/211) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 158 HOME SCHOOLING Ref: DDW00043Date: 09/26/96 From: DONNA RANSDELL Time: 07:12am \/To: APRIL DAWN (Read 2 times) Subj: Summer break?? > I saw Petra with Jonny Q. That's someplace we've never been. Evidently it has had quite a problem with infestations by gangs, but recently we heard that it has been "cleaned up". I had to teach this to my 6th graders when I taught that grade level. It really helps if you can find a textbook or something that has bold print for special words. It also helps to learn what a "topic sentence" is before you try to teach outlining. I don't think I really truly got the hang of outlining until high school. I had a US History teacher in my junior year that wrote out the day's lesson on the board in outline form. You were expected to start copying it as soon as you walked in the room (and most everyone did, as it was a tremendous help in studying for her tests). Due to her method, I finally understood outlining, and I also got a good understanding of the flow of American history. I'm finally in my new home and swamped with boxes. We've managed 2 weeks of school so far but will get back on track Monday. I wanted to tell you that I found a homeschooling mom on my street who teaches piano and I've got both girls signed up for lessons (8/5). She has one 30 min lesson per week (maybe shorter for Amanda depending). She uses those Albert series books for Melody and some other fun thing for Amanda. Lessons are $7 each. She'll also be having a recital before xmas. Lots of fun. I might be zapped, but at least the kids will be on track. Let me know what's up with y'all! Theresa ...
