It looks It's not so bad any more. You probably are too young to remember the Grapevine before I-5 went in. I believe 5 was completed in the early 70s. My dad drove it, towing a travel trailer, a few years before I-5. It was really "hairy", as he said. The section still called the "Grapevine" on I-5 is an easy up and over in comparison to the way it USED to be. The folks that have the most trouble with today's road are either is too much of a hurry to get up and over it, or their cars weren't in decent shape in the first place, or if they are towing a trailer they forget that they are hauling weight and must slow down to let the engine do its job! We just went over this pass a couple of weeks ago, on our first day of our vacation. We went over it before 8 am towing a trailer. Our only negative comment about it was that we were expected to be in the truck lane because we were towing - and that lane was "rutty". > over tomorow. Im going to Disney Land!!!:):):) Lucky you! I love Disneyland - and (to keep this on topic) there are quite a few exhibits there that are educational in nature. Even some things that seem like play are actually there to provide learning experiences. If you're into electronics or computers, just trying to figure out how it all runs so amazingly smooth can be mindboggling in itself. If you'd rather absorb and not think, the art museum (animated art) above Pirates in New Orleans Square is an attraction that many folks miss. Also, the Mr. Lincoln speech is very inspiring even tho it's rather old-tech. -donna --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: The Education Station, Poway, CA - Mail Only (1:202/211) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 158 HOME SCHOOLING Ref: DCZ00005Date: 08/29/96 From: DONNA RANSDELL Time: 06:30am \/To: BLAINE GREENWOOD (Read 2 times) Subj: HOME SCHOOLING > Is it true that legislation in California now requires > smaller class sizes in the public schools? Interested > as I am credentialed teacher in Canada.... and > wondering if it is worth the move... Yes it's true....but I am still an unemployed elementary teacher....it only helps if you're CA trained and straight out of college.... It's also a somewhat strange move. The CA govt has mandated the extra teachers and smaller classrooms, BUT most schools do not have extra classroom space to put them in. At least this is the complaint in the LA and SD areas. From what I have just found out, there are also NO more mobile/portable classrooms to be bought or rented in the entire state. So, for a long time there may be two teachers in one classroom. While this sounds good in theory, let me tell you from experience that two teachers sharing the same classroom must be carefully matched - it's similar to a marriage. My kids aren't to be affected by this change, but if they were, I'd probably do exactly as I'm planning to do this year - if my student load grows for my business, pull my kids out (perhaps around conference time) and homeschool 'em. -donna --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: The Education Station, Poway, CA - Mail Only (1:202/211) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 158 HOME SCHOOLING Ref: DCZ00006Date: 08/29/96 From: SANDY COLBY Time: 05:59pm \/To: DANNY CARLTON (Read 2 times) Subj: LUTHERAN SUPPORT GROUP DC> His bigotry and narrow-mindedness is why this echo has so little > traffic. Sandy, I changed the subject so you wouldn't get in trouble for continuing it and bringing down "you know who's" wrath. One of the sysops on my board was just name "Grand high muckity-muck" or something official sounding of the entire RIME network. He told me that he wishes the homeschool conference there would get some more traffic. From what I can see each network has a very different way of operating and different basic "philosophies" of what a conference should be. For some reason of all the networks that my board carries the only homeshool conference with consistent traffic is this one. I can't figure out why because I know that there are tons of homeschoolers that have access. Usenet is a bit confusing to me. It appears that every post must be addressed to all. In a topical conference like homeschooling knowing who a post is addressed to is as helpful as knowing who it's from. An E-mail list might be interesting.
