It's not a microsoft problem... we write the same way as the Americans do... even if we don't use the same language :) BTW what you set here has no bearing on your spell checkers, date displays etc... The reason for the space thing... In some languages it they have characters that seem to be a combination of a punctuation symbol and a letter. If you press " then O for example, you get an O with two dots on top. That is why that feature is in there. Choosing English (US) disables it. CB>I have even tried selecting the tool button after selecting the (Insert) CB>"Date and Time" and before. Neither works. CB>Have you tried this on your system, does it work? I have, and it does. I think your mistake was that you need to select the field you inserted with the button, then select Date/Time from the Insert menu and change the format ... *then* it will change the default format for future insertions via the button, at least for the life of that particular Word session. The next session, you'll find the default format set back to the first format in the list (at least, that's what happens to me in Word 6). In my case, I usually like to insert the date, not the date field, and I didn't find an existing button to do it. In case anyone else out there has a similar requirement, and like me hasn't done any toolbar customising before, here's how: Select "Customize" from TOOLS. Under the Toolbars tab, choose "All Commands", which gives you exactly what it says! Then choose InsertDateTime, and drag it to the toolbar. You'll get a blank button, and a CustomButton window pops up, to allow you to either select one of a limited range of existing button designs, or to create your own. Hope this is useful. JF> JF> I'll keep pressing the space bar thankyou.... :-) You dont have to change the language, you only have to change the keyboard layout! If you set it to 'US international' you get 'dead-keys'. Keys that act as a prefix to other keys so they can be combined to special characters, like the accented characters we love in europe. (Some of the other keyboard settings also have this feature, other merely swap keys to their local mapping). Setting the keyboard layout to US makes all keys behave like they are labeled on the keys themselves. Date. In the Insert --> Date box, there are alternative formats for the date, the first of which is something like 4/12/97 and the third of which is April 12, 1997. There is a button marked "Default," and the Tool Tips (or maybe it's the Office Assistant) says that using the button will set the default. But when I re-boot, I have to go thru the same rigamarole again. Suggestions? 2. Envelopes. Two problems here. I have set the default font as Times New Roman 12 point. When I use the envelope feature, the font is a different larger one, and I have not been able to figure out how to change the font for envelopes. Suggestions? 3. Tracking changes. I cannot figure out how to set a default here (in Normal.dot) so I do not have this feature activated. Often--but unpredictably so--when I "reuse" a letter (change the name, etc.), and go to print, it will show the revision markings. Sometimes the letter prints ok, but the envelope will print with the name and address underlined (as if indicating new text). Suggestions? That will get me started for now. Thanks for the help!
