Its been 20 years since I did any kingpins, but as I recall, one oddity was that after you pressed the new bushings, you still hadda *ream* them to match the kingpin. Rather than stock bushings, I'd look into getting industrial 'lubrilite' bushings which come in standard sizes, and if you havta *ream* amyway, then the OD is the only critical dimension. for those not familiar, 'lubrilite' is sintered brass micro beads that retain grease better than solid brass, and should *last*. ___ * OFFLINE 1.58 * your girlfriend's broom has a cushion on the handle? --- Maximus 3.01 * Origin: * After F/X * Rochester N.Y. 716-359-1662 (1:2613/415) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 155 OLD CARS Ref: EDN00000 Date: 09/16/97 From: DAY BROWN Time: 11:45pm \/To: METT RENFROW (Read 0 times) Subj: Hot Rod Lincoln On 09-10-97 METT RENFROW wrote to ALL... Look underneath at the inside of the drums for leakage. how far do you havta drive this thing. any bad down hill runs? can you make the trip in wee hour lite traffic? If it aint a short trip, say less than a couple dozen stop sign stops, you might not need to pull the brake drums, on the front esp. I do not think these things had dual brake systems, so if you get one wheel cylinder to leak out all the fluid, *all* the brakes are gone! 72? maybe on a lincoln. bring extra brake fluid. there is a drain plug on the carb float chamber; pull it. 1/2 " socket or box end wrench, hope there is still some gas in there, or all the gaskets will have cracked and be leaking later. Dont it got hydraulic lifters? some will undoubtedly collapse after all these years. pull the plugs, and it will crank really fast, pump up the oil pressure to all the bearings, and hopefully it will pump up any collapsed lifters. Stick your finger in each sparkplug hole while cranking to feel for compression. If you dont get any, then the cylinder either has a blown valve, or a collapsed lifter. If another minute of cranking dont free it, pop the valve cover, and use a plastic dish detergent bottle with kerosene or mineral spirits in it to dribble some onto the push rod, so it will run on down into the sticky lifter- while cranking the motor. a tablespoon works. If it dont, and you can start it, try it while idling, but you will havta cover the other rockers with a rag so it don't squirt oil all over while you are futzing. If you think it is a blown valve, hammer the sparkplug terminals togather to short it out so it dont fire till you get a round tuit. That wont burn it any worse, or worse pop the valve head off, and... you doan wanna no. Drain, flush, replace coolant; check play on fan/waterpump shaft. bring extra water. The contacts in the voltage regulator may stick or be so corroded that it wont turn on the charge, and if it don't a fully charged battery will only run the car for an hour with lights, or for 200 miles during the daytime. you can pop the regulator cover, and use a 'diamond deb' or sapphire nail file to clean the contacts; steel 'point' dont cut nearly as clean, and the black alum oxide sandpaper always leaves microscopic particles in the surface which screw up the connectivity. Be nice to jack a rear wheel off the ground, making the gear lube run into the bearing on the other side, then change sides, and run the wheel up to 10 mph or so to lube the bearings, then back to the first side for it's turn running with a new oil bath. That C-4 tranny is a real pig in a poke. pull the dipstick, and rub a little ATF off the stick, and onto your thumb and forefinger to spread it out so you can smell it. Burnt? might havta just tighten up the bands, or might havta replace it. But if it works at all, it will probly do a hundred miles anyway. ___ * OFFLINE 1.58 * Monotonous monogamy is a redundancy. --- Maximus 3.01 * Origin: * After F/X * Rochester N.Y. 716-359-1662 (1:2613/415) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 155 OLD CARS Ref: EDN00001 Date: 09/19/97 From: MODERATOR Time: 12:10am \/To: ALL (Read 0 times) Subj: Rules of the OLDCARS Echo Rules for FidoNet's OLDCARS Echo *** Revised 3-18-96 *** The following are the rules for the OLDCARS FIDO-NET echo conference. This conference is carried on the FIDO-NET backbone and is moderated by Gerry Calhoun at 1:2004/200. These rules will be subject to change if a change seems needed or is requested. Enforcement of the rules will be handled in the echo and/or via net-mail. Repeated violations of the rules may be considered grounds for the offending node to have its link to this conference cut. Rule #1: Please try to keep your language suitable to all ages. Remember this message base is open to all age groups, and some may take offense to foul language. Rule #2: The topic here is OLD CARS. What makes a car an old car? For the purpose of this echo, a pre 1975 car in general is qualifed to be considered an OLD CAR. But this is a very flexible rule as limited production cars of newer vintage may be considered on topic. If in doubt, ask the Moderator. Rule #3: No unsolicited commerical sales announcements please. This echo is carried by sysops who foot the bills out of their own pockets for the most part. If sommebody asks for a source of a CAR-RELATED item, feel free to offer advice on where to look for something, or to mention that you have what they are looking for. If you have something which you feel may be of interest to somebody here and are NOT in the business of selling that item and it is OLD CAR-related, you may post about it here. Rule #4: No unsolicited BBS ads here. If you know of a system which has a program or file that somebody has asked about, feel free to post the name, phone number and location of the system, but no messages saying "Call this system now" type of thing. Rule #5: Keep the message-quoting to a minimum, please. Most BBS's are run out of the pockets of private sysops, and nobody wants to pay for (or see) a 20-line message quoted in full to have somebody else say "I Agree". Rule #6: Keep the personal attacks to a minimum, please. Everybody has seen messages posted by people who strike you as complete fools, but you do not have to call a person names in order to give an answer or correct him/her on a point. Hold the flames to a mimimum and try to keep this a fun place. These are all the rules for now. If any other points come up in the future, they will be addressed and added to this list if necessary. If there are any questions or comments about these rules, address them to me, Gerry Calhoun, via net-mail ONLY at 1:2004/200. --- * Origin: PETS R US! 805-946-8345 - Lancaster, CA (1:2004/0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 155 OLD CARS Ref: EDN00002 Date: 09/18/97 From: CRAIG HEALY Time: 10:27pm \/To: ROY WITT (Read 0 times) Subj: Hot Rod Lincoln -> 16 Sep 97 18:12, Puleeeeze Brer Craig Healy, Dooooon't trow Hot Rod L -> dat der Briar Patch! -> -> CH> Should be a 460. A good idea before cranking any engine that has set this long is to pull all the plugs and put a little oil (couple of teaspoons) down each plug hole and crank it with the plugs removed. There could be some rust in the cylinders and the oil will help. --- timEd 1.10 * Origin: The Hitchhikers Guide (1:2004/205) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 155 OLD CARS Ref: EDP00000 Date: 09/19/97 From: ROY WITT Time: 06:32pm \/To: CRAIG HEALY (Read 0 times) Subj: Hot Rod Lincoln 18 Sep 97 22:27, Puleeeeze Brer Craig Healy, Dooooon't trow Hot Rod Lincoln in dat der Briar Patch! ->> Didn't Ford move those shock towers to accomodate the 427 back then? ->> the stock Fairlanes, but the Thunderbolts.
