This is the only issue which I would add to the experimental list. Manifold vacuum is/was the source of choice for hot rodding. However, you do have to couple that with a reasonable amount of vacuum advance (a 10 degree can fr'instance.) Chances are your sons initial distributor had a 20 degree advance can. Wayy too much for any serious tuning efforts that deviate from stock, especially when going to a hotter cam. Even in stock situations its can be too much. If your get rattling when going to WFOT, theres probably too much vacuum advance. Heres one to contemplate for the manifold/ported vacuum debate: Travelling uphill, you open throttle to maintain speed; manifold vaccum drops, ported increases. Hooked to manifold you reduce vacuum advance and consequently reduce the chances for pinging. Hooked to a ported source, you might induce a pinging due to the vacuum advance remaining fully advanced. Not a good situation, and one that could lead you on a path of head scratching over the cause of the ping. With ignitions, as with anything else, you have to work the system, and find what works best for your situation. Basically, all I'm saying is that Manifold vacuum (except in Chryslers) is not a wrong choice for vacuum advance. Alex. | AmiQWK 2.7 - S/N 0261 | ... Just before I found a pair of Chevy truck rallys (15x7 5 hole) for snow tires I priced out 15x7 American Racing Chrome Nuggets and they where $55 each. Thats Canadian funds. Very reasonably priced for brand new wheels. And since 6 hole lugs are used on a variety of GM trucks, the aftermarket has that segment covered as well. At least then you could find just about everything and anything you wanted. Gone are the days when I could buy a 3 spoke stainless steel Corvette steering wheel for 10 bucks... I guess trucks, no matter where on the continent are hard to find. Around here, unless the seats are shredded, truck interiors have been totally stripped. The reason there ARE old cars is because of people that can't afford a new one. The reason there are CLASSIC cars is because people take a certain liking to a certain style that is not offered anymore and is considered nostalgic. Here in CA there are many very dependable old cars; like my 65 Bonneville. Sure i had to run it for a few months to get the bugs out (Waterpump, ALternator and Battery) But now it's as reliable as any new car. Maybe more so than some! The only real drawbacks are poor cold starting, lots o' miles, poor MPG and too much attention! --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: The Vortex Nexus - 805.967.4070 (1:206/2734) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 155 OLD CARS Ref: E3300012 Date: 03/03/97 From: ELVIS HARGROVE Time: 09:00am \/To: LANDON ROBINSON (Read 0 times) Subj: Re: engine prob. -> won't be for a couple of weeks. I made a ton (short ton) of money back in the 60's cutting the centers out of 6 hole 16" chevy wheels and welding them into 15" rims. I'd make 'em any width and offset you wanted. (Within reason) All were sold as "Trailer Wheels ONLY" but lots of folks used 'em on pickups and dirt track racecars. Never had one come back broken. Welding the center in the rim without warping the heck out of the whole mess was quite a trip! We made a gadget to roll 'em back straight if they warped, but it was easier to just MAKE 'em straight to begin with.
