Where can I get new stock engine parts? I drive a 1974 VW Super Beetle, and I would like to built a stock engine for it. And I don't mean a stock 1969 engine, but an actual December 1973, VW Super Beetle, non-California. (It was built in 73, but it's a 74 model.) I'm looking for German or US parts. Mexican and Brazilian parts don't have the specs I need, and don't last very long. (On a Mexican head, I almost cut my hand holding it, it had no many burs on and in it! Doesn't carbon build up on them?) I'm looking for German or US heads, crank, case, cam, etc... I would also like to find a VERY specific carb. It's a VW Solex 34-PICT 3. It has a vacuum port for EGR, and one for vacuum advance. It also has the midified pump linkage does it doesn't stick on the alternator. (Basically a 74 non California carb.) What kind of car you select definately is a IB> reflection upon your personality! The new cars are really great compared to the old ones in many respects. Even though there are a lot of duplicates in production, there's still far more offerings then when I was in high school. Current cars are quite exotic as a result of two things: one is demand...the yuppies of the '70s started paying for Porches, BMWs and Mercedes saying they'd last a lifetime (ha, ha). The Japanese like to mimic anything they see with quality and gimmickry, so here comes Toyota with Lexus, and Honda with Accura. Add to that, public mandates for guaranteed safety, coupled with lawsuits over exploding gas tanks and there you have it, today's expensive cars. I love 'em because they are the cars I *dreamed* of when I was in high school...fuel injection, alloy wheels, low hood profiles, fast, agile, great stereo...etc., etc. What I'm not saying is that I don't like old cars too. I'd love to have the '66 Vette I passed up buying in 1973 for $2,200. It was a good one and I remember haggling with the owner and he wouldn't budge on his price (it was fair, I just couldn't afford to pay more than $2,000 with a wife and two kids to feed). In 1979, I bought a new Vette for $11,500. That's how much inflation changed things! What's one cost now? Perhaps $45,000? I don't know where the price spiral is going to end but people's demands are ever increasing as are government requirements...Car makers are also building them to be disposable to ensure everlasting demand. I don't know how average people will be able to afford new cars soon. Here's my adage...Buy an old one for the nostalgia and fun but buy a new one to get you back and forth to work (if you can afford either!) Last time the set it to 22.5 degrees, the student instructor did it, not he real one like thie time, and i got crap for gas mileage but had better power at cruising speeds! anyways, i got the car home, ran great, did a burnout at the same length as when it was set at 22.5 (or so) so i figured it was all ok. When the car is idling in drive, it slows, sputters, nearly stalls, then speeds up. Surges, if you will. I checked the timing, (Disconnectes dist.vac. line) it was perfect. Plugged the vac. line back in and immediately the timing mark jumped, i on;t know how many degrees but about an inch or more advanced. (The engine would barely run w/o the dist. vac. line plugged in) Then i had someone rev the engine and the mark never moved from that spot. The pedal was to the floor for a brief moment, but still the timing mark ever moved. I figure either the vac. advance is pulling ALL the time, or the springs in the distributor are too weak and letting the mech. advance go all the time. help! thanks. --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: The Vortex Nexus - 805.967.4070 (1:206/2734)
