There has to be a better way of > defining these > motors. Actually all the olds engines pretty much have almost the same measurments, except for deck heights and bore/stroke.. the 260/307/350/403 engines are bored and have the same stroke (which is 3.385").. the other olds engines are 400/425/455.. i guess you could call them small/big blocks.. i have heard them talked about in that figure.. but they are all basically the same engine family.. meaning that you can leagaly replace your small block 260/307/350 with a larger 400/425/455 and just run the same smog equipment on it.. that is what I have heard (CA swap laws) --- FMail/386 1.0g * Origin: People in Union City, CA sure do love their old cars! =) (1:215/201) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 155 OLD CARS Ref: DCY00014 Date: 08/28/96 From: MICHAEL JONES Time: 10:21pm \/To: ALL (Read 3 times) Subj: Oldsmobile Cylinder Heads I am having a problem teying to ID my oldsmobile cylinder heads.. they're still bolted to the block, and the block is currently bolted in the car (like you wanted to know about that) but my problem is that I have read in a magazine (200 Power and Performance Tips" from peterson publishing, pg 14) how to ID the heads.. It says that there is a casting number above the center exhaust port, and there is an 'ID' code ajacent to the number 1 spark plug hole.. the ID code differs inbetween big/small block castings. Big Block castings, the ID code is usually a letter, the small block usually a number.. so I try to ID my heads (small block olds, 350, stock in a '78 full size RWD) and the 'ID' code on my head is an 'A'! Now I am really confused.. I have yet to take off the heat stove to see the center casting number.. but there are two more castings on the head.. one is a 'GM1' and one is a 'PMD'.. they are located inbetween the left and center and right and center exhaust ports respectively.. any ideas on these? I'm thinking 'PMD' means 'Pontiac Motor Division'! --- FMail/386 1.0g * Origin: People in Union City, CA sure do love their old cars! =) (1:215/201) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 155 OLD CARS Ref: DCY00015 Date: 08/28/96 From: JOHN L.
