It's Siamesed cylinders lead to the 400. >Big blocks; >366-396-400-402-427-454 >the 366 is a large-truck block. (Those with the big cabs, large boxes >on a single chassis) >the 400 and 402 are overbored 396 engines. 1970 I believe was the >year when your "396" big block came from the factory as a 402. What about the infamous 409? Plus there is now the 502 and 572 in the Big block line-up. These are a stroked 454 and a new over the counter design respectivly. Other wise a good synopsis of the differences. I think some of the car companies should REALLY get together to decide what the qualifications are of a sb and bb. Ford has 4 distinct families, two of which are recognized as BB but one of the last two hangs between confusing people. (Is a cleve a huge smallblock or a small BB? who can know...) And I have almost gotten into fight over Pontiac motors. I don't care what they say, Just because they only have 1 size does NOT mean pontiac only has smallblocks. If anything they only have BB 's :> Same for olds etc etc... There has to be a better way of defining these motors. ... So the MM> exterior is more important than the mechanics for someone on a budget MM> looking for a good looking classic car? Let's put it this way: Can you turn a wrench? If YES, get the best body you can afford, since everything else is just held on by nuts and bolts. If NO, get a new hobby NOW, since you're in for a rough ride! Do you have a HUGE aircompressor you can use to DA sand your car with? Are you a master with a MIG welder? Do you have experience with bondo? Do you have a spray booth in your backward? If YES, get whatever you want, cause you've got it made. If NO, then get the best condition body you can, and forget the mechanicals. That's simplified, of course.. ..but the idea is right. Most people can't get a show quality paint job in their back yard.. but ANYONE can bolt on an intake, or a starter motor. MEchanicals is SIMPLISTIC compared to body work. Mike ...
